Ultiva is the brand name for the generic medication Remifentanil. Ultiva is a narcotic pain reliever that is generally used to treat pain both during and after procedures and surgery. The medication may also be used in other situations where anesthesia is used. Ultiva may also be used for pain control for a few days after surgery if closely supervised by a doctor.

Ultiva is generally injected into a vein by slow IV applications or continuous infusion by medical professionals specifically trained to administer the drug. This medication should only be used in a hospital or clinical setting where the individual can be closely monitored or life-support equipment is in close range. A physician should be immediately contacted if an individual misses a dose of Ultiva.

Abuses of Ultiva

Ultiva is extremely potent and a too high dose can take a life, while an addiction can do the same. There is a high risk for abuse of Ultiva within the medical industry as those trained to use it to treat others have been found to use the medication for their own habits. In fact, there is a growing problem among doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers who use their position to illegally obtain the drug.

Ultiva is often sought by abusers wishing to achieve a specific euphoric high. The challenge is that the first high is never again achieved. In the search for the recreation, users continue to take more and more of the medication, developing a dangerous addiction that can easily lead to death.

Effects of Ultiva

A number of individuals have been known to use Ultiva with no side effects, while others have experienced changes in vision, chills, dizziness, drowsiness, fever, headache, itching, nausea, shivering, sweating or vomiting.

For some users severe side effects can occur, including allergic reactions such as rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue. Other severe effects include fast or slow heartbeat, interrupted breathing, lightheadedness, muscle tightness, pain, redness or swelling at the injection site and seizures.

Withdrawal of Ultiva

Ultiva, when taken for long periods of time or in high doses, can cause an individual to experience withdrawal once the drug is no longer taken. Therefore, it is highly recommended that the medication be gradually decreased as abrupt withdrawal can cause severe reactions, including death.

The following symptoms can occur in the Ultiva withdrawal stage, but are not limited only to these symptoms:

• Anxiety

• Diarrhea

• Fever

• Runny nose

• Sneezing

• Goose bumps

• Abnormal skin sensations

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Pain

• Rigid muscles

• Rapid heartbeat

• Seeing, hearing or feeling things not there

• Shivering or tremors

• Sweating

• Trouble sleeping

Treatment of Ultiva Addiction

An Ultiva addiction can be life-threatening and it is important that this medication is stopped if it is not used for medicinal purposes or has been used too long. With the intensity of withdrawal symptoms, it is important that those with an addiction discontinue Ultiva gradually under the care of a board-certified physician and a board-certified physiatrist.

A quality treatment center will take a comfortable detox method approach that uses withdrawal medications specific to Ultiva abuse. Treatment typically includes a full physical on an Ultiva addict to determine the right medications for this method. This approach helps to correct the chemical imbalances and should be combined with psychological evaluations and other medical care to ensure the success of the treatment.
