Substance abuse

Substance abuse is the harmful use of and dependence on a drug or other mood-altering substance. Although substance abuse is used hand-in-hand with the term “drug abuse” and many reference the term in its relation to the use of illicit drugs, substance abuse includes any repeated use of a substance that negatively impact’s one’s life including his or her work, personal relationships, or school obligations. Additionally, substance abuse refers to any substance that is used outside of what it was intended for. For example, a prescription drug whereby the user does not follow the physician’s orders is considered abuse. Substance abuse can lead to addiction and substance dependence.
