Schedule II Controlled Substances

Congress enacted the Controlled Substances Act in 1970 and established five schedules of controlled substances, known as Schedules I, II, III, IV and V. The schedules are arranged first in terms of abuse potential, with Schedule I substances being the highest. The next consideration for categorizing substances is whether there is any currently accepted medical use for the drug or substance. Finally, any other safety or psychological complications that are pertinent are listed.

Parameters for Inclusion in Schedule II

The classification for Schedule II substances and drugs stipulates:

(A) The drug has a high potential for abuse.

(B) The drug or substance has a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States or a currently accepted medical use with severe restrictions.

(C) Abuse of the drug or other substances may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence.

Specific Substances and Drugs in Schedule II Controlled Substances

Following is a list of substances and drugs currently classified as Schedule II Controlled Substances. Note that since 1970, approximately 160 substances or drugs have been added, deleted, or moved to other schedules. The lists are updated and published on an annual basis.
