SAMHSA’s National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) provides a web site, SAMHSA’s National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI), for dissemination of information of substance abuse prevention and addiction treatment. It serves as a one-stop resource for such information. The web site is part of the SAMHSA Health Information Network and is at http://ncadi.samhsa.gov

Interested parties can also contact SAMHSA at 1-877-SAMHSA-7 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The SAMHSA National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information has English- and Spanish-speaking specialists to assist callers with appropriate publications, pamphlets, brochures, and videocassettes, and to do customized searches, provide information on funding and grants, and referrals to appropriate organizations.

NCADI Services

NCADI specialists respond to requests for information on alcohol and drugs via email, telephone, voice mail, postal mail, TDD and fax. These requests come from numerous sources including the general public, specialists at drug and alcohol treatment facilities, schools, educators, community centers, boys and girls clubs, shopping malls and others. Services provided through NCADI include:

Orders for Publications – NCADI makes available many fact sheets, brochures, posters, videocassettes, monographs and posters – free or low-cost. NCADI specialists taking the requests are familiar with the available materials and make recommendations as to those most appropriate to the requester’s needs.

Speaking with an Information Specialist – NCADI information specialists are available to speak with callers 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. TDD and Spanish language services are also available. These specialists are trained to answer questions on prevention, intervention and treatment of substance and alcohol abuse. NCADI also has an on-site visitor request service.

Referrals – NCADI specialists can refer callers to organizations and centers for substance and alcohol abuse. The NCADI specialists are also trained to handle crisis calls.

SAMHSA’s e-Network – Provides those who sign up with up-to-date information on self-selected topics such as grants, publications, campaigns, programs, and statistics and data reports. Subscribers can unsubscribe at any time to stop receiving information from SAMHSA.
