Rehab

Rehab, when used in conjunction with addiction, dependence or abuse of substances or behaviors, usually refers to a place where a person receives rehabilitation treatment on an inpatient or residential basis. There is also outpatient rehab or treatment, support groups and care centers. Rehab is the short form of the word rehabilitation.

Types of Rehab

Alcohol and drug rehab are the two most common types of rehab, but they are by no means the only rehab available. There is also rehab for gambling, workaholism, overeating, compulsive sex and compulsive spending.

Length of Rehab

Residential rehab placement usually lasts between six and 12 weeks, although it can continue much longer. In severe cases of addiction, rehab may take up to a year or longer.

Some rehab is time-limited in the sense that insurance coverage only covers a certain length of time. This does not mean that the individual in rehab is ready to leave the treatment program, however, as the length of time for an individual to fully realize the benefits of treatment varies according to numerous factors. Among these are the type of substance or addiction, duration and frequency of use, biological, hereditary, social and other factors.
