Prescriptions pain killers are medications used to reduce pain. Most prescription pain killers fall under the opiate class of drugs.

Opioids act by attaching to specific proteins called opioid receptors, which are found in the brain, spinal cord, and gastrointestinal tract. When these compounds attach to certain opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, they can effectively change the way a person experiences pain.

Pain killers are generally prescribed to treat pain due to an accident or recovery from surgery. There are many classes of pain killer and drugs are prescribed based on the severity of pain. Some extremely powerful pain killers are specifically used for things such as breakthrough pain in terminal cancer patients such as Fentanyl.
