Generic Name: pentobarbital

Drug Class: barbiturates

Route & Dose: adult dose of Nembutal is 150 to 200 mg given by intramuscular injection

Nembutal is a central nervous system depressant, which means this drug slows the activity of the brain and nervous system. It is sometimes used for short periods of time to treat insomnia. It is sometimes used as an emergency treatment for seizures and as a pre-anaesthetic. The drug is given by injection by a health care provider.

Warning: Patients with porphyria should not be given nembutol/pentobarbital. Pregnant and nursing women should be given this drug.

Because the drug is a CNS depressant it should not be taken with alcohol or other CNS depressants, including antihistamines. It has also been shown that this drug decreases the effectiveness of birth control pills. If you are taking nembutal you should use an alternative, non-hormonal form of birth control.

Barbiturates are highly addictive drugs and nembutal users can develop tolerance which leads to increasing the dosage beyond the recommendation of doctors. Because it depresses breathing, it is not recommended for people with asthma or COPD.

Side effects may include sleepiness, confusion, depression, anxiety, nightmares, breathing disorders, nausea, or vomiting.
