For those who are suffering with a mental illness, times have changed considerably. Not too many generations ago, one suffering with a mental illness was often locked up and kept away from “normal” society to live an empty existence. Now, mental illness is viewed in a whole new light, yet stigmas still exist. One agency, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, aims to change the stigma and fight for the rights of the mentally ill.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) was created in 1979 and has a public and dedicated focus on improving the lives of individuals and families who have been affected by mental illness. This grassroots effort brings together advocates to produce profound change throughout the country.

It is easy to assume that mental illness only affects “other people” but national statistics show that one in four families are impacted by this disease. Even more disturbing is the fact that while treatment has been proven effective, only half of those living with a mental illness receive the treatment they need. With the potential for such an impact, NAMI focuses efforts on raising awareness and identifying those who need the support to seek the proper treatment.

One of the biggest challenges for those living with mental illness is the stigma associated with their diagnosis. Peers, associates and even loved ones may not understand the condition and therefore cannot provide the proper support. NAMI tries to allocate resources to educate the public about mental illness and provide it with a face and a voice. The organization develops support programs that deliver relevant information, valuable insight and the opportunity for all those involved to engage in support networks.

Perhaps one of the most important roles NAMI aims to fill is the voice for advocacy on Capitol Hill and in state houses throughout the nation. Advocates on behalf of NAMI have fought for policy changes that raise the bar on care for those suffering with mental illness. They have also pushed for equal treatment and research in the field in comparison with other illnesses. While it is an ongoing battle, it is one that must be fought on the frontline so as not to be pushed aside in favor of more prominent issues.

Whether or not an individual is touched personally by someone with a mental illness, NAMI works for the betterment of all people. In any given situation, we may not know if the person with whom we work, play or interact with is struggling with a mental illness. With organizations like NAMI in place, we can be assured the education we need is in place and advocates are working to make the world a little fairer for those who see it through different eyes.
