A drug overdose occurs when a person takes too much of a drug so that it causes physical reactions that require immediate medical attention. An overdose can occur either due to short-term extreme use or due to long-term abuse that allows build up of the drug in the body.

Symptoms of a drug overdose might include:

  • Vomiting or diarreha
  • Uncontrollable shaking or delirium tremens
  • Seizures
  • Unconsciousness
  • Inability to rouse the person
  • Heart palpitations or tachychardia
  • Kidney, liver, or other organ failure
  • Stroke or heart attack
  • Loss of vision
  • Sweating
  • Hallucinations
  • Mental status changes: incoherent speech, confusion, delusions
