Doctor shop

"Doctor shop" is a slang term meaning to go from one doctor or pain clinic or emergency room to another, registering as a new patient, in order to obtain prescription drugs. People who abuse prescription drugs have to "doctor shop" because any one doctor will keep track of how many pills they are taking and start to limit their amounts. Abuse of opioid painkillers is so widespread in the United States that some states are now requiring doctors and drug stores to monitor the amounts of drugs an individual is using and to share information, as a way of eliminating "doctor shopping."
