History of the Department of Justice
The Judiciary Act of 1789, passed by Congress and signed by President George Washington, created the Office of the Attorney General. Originally a one-person office, the workload became too much for a single individual to handle.
In 1870, the U.S. Congress passed the Act to Establish the Department of Justice, and set it up as “an executive department of the government of the United States,” with the Attorney General as its head. The Office of Solicitor General was also created at that time. Charged with officially handling the legal business of the United States, the Department of Justice now had control over all criminal prosecutions and civil suits in which the United States had an interest.
In addition, the Department of Justice and the Attorney General now controlled federal law enforcement. In the years since the passage of the Act, the positions of Attorney Generals and various divisions have been added.
