Cylert is the brand name of the generic medication pemoline. Cylert is used to help in the treatment of children who are dealing with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is often recommended that Cylert only be prescribed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that offers both psychological and educational support to help the child to become more stable.

Cylert is a central nervous system stimulant and is structurally dissimilar to the amphetamines and methylphenidate (Ritalin). In its generic form, Cylert is a white, tasteless, odorless powder that is relatively insoluble in water, chloroform, ether, acetone and benzene.

Abuses of Cylert

Cylert is subject to control under the Drug Enforcement Act as a Schedule IV drug. While the drug did not demonstrate a potential for self-administration in clinical animal trials, it is closely related to other psycho-stimulants that have a known dependence. This suggests that psychological and/or physical dependence and tolerance can occur with Cylert.

There have also been isolated reports in the industry of transient psychotic symptoms occurring in adults following the long-term misuse of excessive oral doses of Cylert and its generic equivalent. As a result, it is imperative that the medication is given to emotionally unstable patients only when closely monitored as they may increase the dosage on their own initiative.

Effects of Cylert

Cylert works by reducing excitability and calming impulse behaviors. When taken for even short amounts of time, the medication has been known to cause rare cases of liver damage and those children taking the medication must be monitored for liver function every two weeks.

The most common side effect associated with Cylert is insomnia. Other effects can include depression, dizziness, drowsiness, hallucinations, headache, hepatitis and other liver problems, increased irritability, involuntary, fragmented movements of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, arms, and legs, loss of appetite, mild depression, nausea, seizures, skin rash, stomachache, suppressed growth, uncontrolled vocal outbursts (such as grunts, shouts, and obscene language), weight loss and yellowing of skin or eyes.

Withdrawal of Cylert

The long-term use of Cylert can cause tolerance and dependence to develop. As a result, an individual will find that more and more of the medication is needed to achieve the same result. When this dependence develops, stopping the drug abruptly can create specific withdrawal symptoms.

Withdrawal symptoms associated with the removal of Cylert from the body can include, but are not limited to:

• Stomach pain

• Trembling

• Depressed mood

• Weakness

• Tiredness

• Anxiety

Treatment of Cylert Addiction

A Cylert addiction has the potential to be life-threatening. For those taking the drug for its intoxication effects, dependence can occur rapidly, making it difficult to discontinue the drug. To ensure an individual effectively removes the medication from their system without causing serious problems, it is recommended the drug be stopped incrementally while under the care of a physician.

A board-certified physician and board-certified addiction psychiatrist should monitor the treatment of an individual with a Cylert addiction. A quality center can administer a comfortable detox regime for 24/7 care that will ensure the individual rids their body of the drug completely, learning to function without it.
