“Drug craving,” according to the United Nations International Drug Control Programme and World Health Organization, “is the desire for the previously experienced effects of a psychoactive drug. This desire can become compelling and can increase in the presence of both internal and external cues, particularly with perceived substance availability. It is characterized by an increased likelihood of drug-seeking behavior or, in humans, drug-related thoughts.” The “need” for the substance is triggered by dopamine sensors, which send a cued response to seek re-establishment of the substance.
