Cheracol with Codeine is a brand name also known as the generic drug codeine and guaifenesin. It is also found under other brand names, including Allfen CD, Robitussin-AC, Cheratussin AC, Dex-Tuss, and M-Clear WC. Codeine is a narcotic drug and its application is as a cough suppressant that affects areas of the brain that control the cough reflex. Codeine is also a pain reliever.

Guaifenesin is an expectorant that loosens mucus in the lungs for expelling through the mouth. When combined, codeine and guaifenesin treat chest congestion and cough caused by bacterial infections in the upper respiratory system, allergies or the common cold. The combination of codeine and guaifenesin will not treat coughing and congestion due to asthma, emphysema or smoking.

Abuses of Cheracol with Codeine

Cough syrups containing codeine produce a euphoric high when abused, and users often mix the cough syrup with soda and hard candy to experience its effects. The advantages to substance abusers are that it is a relatively inexpensive drug and gives a narcotic high. Cheracol with codeine is often abused because it is perceived as cool and gives an enjoyable high. However, like all narcotics it is very addictive and can be lethal.

Because codeine is a derivative of morphine, it will produce a similar type of dependency to heroin, despite its less potent formulation. Once an addiction has been formed, the user will need to use the drug multiple times each day. Users develop a tolerance for codeine, requiring increased amounts of the drug to experience similar effects, which increases the risk for overdose.

Effects of Cheracol with Codeine

The effects of this drug are usually initiated within forty-five minutes after oral administration and last between four to six hours. Codeine taken orally is absorbed through the gastro-intestinal tract. There is little loss of the drug during the passage through the liver.

Codeine is converted to morphine when it enters the brain and then suppresses the area of the brain that controls the cough reflex. Codeine syrup is prescribed for patients who are experiencing a non-productive cough. Patients using Cheracol with codeine may experience dizziness, drowsiness or headache, warmth, redness or tingling under the skin, nausea or vomiting, constipation, or a skin rash or itching.

Withdrawal of Cheracol with Codeine

Cheracol with codeine is habit-forming. It is possible to become psychologically and/or physically dependent on this drug. If a person develops a dependency, with cessation of use the user will enter quickly into a withdrawal similar to a heroin withdrawal. The withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to:

Nausea

Pain

Anxiety

Diarrhea

Insomnia

Irritability

Symptoms will last for several days with intensity before subsiding. Users suffering from withdrawal symptoms should be placed under medical care in a residential or outpatient detoxification clinic. Patients experiencing withdrawal symptoms should immediately contact a doctor and be placed under medical care as soon as possible.

Treatment of Cheracol with codeine

Extended use of Cheracol with codeine can lead to extreme physical pain and psychological distress when discontinuing the use of the drug. A sudden discontinuation of the drug can especially cause the user intense suffering. As a result, it is recommended that users gradually cease drug use under the care of a board-certified physician and board-certified addiction psychiatrist. Entering a quality center for 24/7 comfortable detox treatment will ensure the individual rids their body of the drug completely, or the user might seek treatment at a residential or outpatient detox clinic.

This method involves the administration of medications that are specifically designed for those wishing to discontinue addiction to Cheracol with codeine. The medications are used to correct the chemical imbalances in the individual suffering with the addiction and should be combined with psychological evaluations and other medical care to address cravings for the drug.
