Brontex
From Drug Rehab Wiki
Brontex is the brand name for a cough syrup that contains the generics codeine and guaifenesin. Other brand name medications contain codeine and guaifenesin and are marketed to address the same issues. These brands include, Cheracol with Codeine, Cheratussin AC, Guaiatussin AC, Guaifen-C, Guiatuss AC, Guiatussin with Codeine, Iophen-C NR, Robitussin AC and Mytussin AC.
Brontex is included in a part of a group of narcotic drugs as a result of the codeine in the medication. Brontex is known to affect the signals in the brain that trigger the cough reflex. The guaifenesin in the syrup acts as an expectorant as it helps to loosen mucus congestion in the chest and throat. The medication is known to treat the symptoms caused by upper respiratory infections or the common cold but will not treat a cough caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema. Abuses of Brontex
Over-the-counter medications are often easily abused. In the case of Brontex, it is the codeine that helps to deliver the euphoric high people will seek with this medication. The body of a user will turn the codeine into morphine and the individual will feel an impact that is similar to that of heroin. As an opiate, codeine is very addictive. Those who seek to abuse Brontex often do so by visiting their doctors and complaining about coughs and other cold symptoms.
Brontex can easily be favored by addicts for three basic reasons: it is legal and therefore considered to be more acceptable among peers; it is low cost or even free when obtained through samples or taken from medicine cabinets; and it is seen as a safer option than other drugs of abuse because it is available over-the-counter. As a result, it is not uncommon for those seeking such a high to drink cough syrup straight.
Effects of Brontex
The codeine in Brontex has the most significant effect on an individual. Codeine is an opiate and is turned into morphine by the body. This process creates an effect similar to morphine or heroin. Often used to relieve pain and anxiety, codeine can also depress breathing and other body systems as well.
As a cough syrup, Brontex activates specific opioid receptors in the central nervous system. This medication can also affect receptors in the part of the brain called the cerebellum, which plays a role in coordinating movement. This role is often blamed in reports of peculiar reactions to movement among persons abusing cough syrup. Brontex effects can include drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, facial flushing, nausea, vomiting or constipation. More serious effects such as mental/mood changes, fast/irregular heartbeat, slow/shallow breathing or trouble urinating can also occur.
Withdrawal of Brontex
Any individual who stops taking cough syrup after prolonged use or excessive doses can experience a range of unpleasant and dangerous symptoms. The symptoms themselves and their intensity can depend on the content dosage of the preparation. Cessation of the syrup will immediately lead to withdrawal, which is similar to heroin withdrawal. The symptoms associated with the withdrawal from Brontex can include but are not limited to:
• Nausea
• Pain
• Anxiety
• Diarrhea
• Insomnia
• Irritability
Treatment of Brontex Abuse
Brontex used for a long period of time or in large doses over a long period of time can lead to intense addictions. As a result, the individual can experience severe pain and psychological distress when the medication is discontinued, especially abruptly. As a result, it is recommended that users taper off the medication slowly under the care of a board-certified physician and board-certified addiction psychiatrist.
Entering a quality center for 24/7 comfortable detox treatment will ensure the individual rids their body of the drug completely. This method involves the application of medications that are specifically designed for addiction to Brontex. These medications are used to correct the chemical imbalances in the individual suffering with the addiction and should be combined with psychological evaluations and other medical care to address cravings for the drug. Recovery many take a little longer with this type of cough syrup as a result of the presence of codeine.
