Binge eating is a pattern of disordered eating in which a person consumes a large amount of food in a relatively short time. He is unable to stop himself from eating, even if he is not hungry. Usually, the binge occurs when the person is alone, upset or depressed. Afterwards, he feels depressed and out of control. He may try to control his behavior but cannot. He also may compensate the large caloric intake by dieting or exercising afterwards.

Binge-eating disorder is the most common kind of eating disorder recognized by doctors, and affects a large percentage of obese people.

Besides the psychological problems involved, binge eating leads to health problems such as obesity, depression, insomnia, and obesity-related problems such as gallbladder disease, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, joint problems, and heart disease.
