Alcohol abuse
From Drug Rehab Wiki
Alcohol abuse is a term used to describe the early stages of alcohol dependence. During the stage of alcohol abuse, the drinker begins to show signs of problematic usage of alcoholic beverages. The alcohol abuser may show signs such as:
- Diminished capacity at work
- Problems meeting family obligations
- Academic problems at school
The alcohol abuser may begin to put themselves in dangerous situations while under the influence of alcohol, such as driving under the influence or operating machinery in an unsafe manner.
They may abuse alcohol to such an extent that they have already had alcohol-related legal problems, such as a DUI or disorderly conduct charges.
Alcohol abuse, when used as a term to describe the behavior of a drinker, includes having had negative consequences due to drinking that occurred within a 12-month period. The drinker also does not quit drinking despite these negative consequences.
If alcohol abuse continues, the person is at risk for alcohol dependence.
