A narcotic pain reliever, codeine acts as a cough suppressant to deliver relief to those dealing with excessive cough. The medication affects areas of the brain that control the cough reflex, while guaifenesin is an expectorant that loosens the mucus in the lungs. When combined, codeine and guaifenesin treat chest congestion and cough caused by bacterial infections in the upper respiratory system, allergies or the common cold. It will not treat coughing and congestion due to asthma, emphysema or smoking.

Abuses of Dex-Tuss
When taken by those for recreational purposes, cough syrups containing codeine can produce a euphoric high, making them a key target for those seeking to achieve that high for a low price. Users have been known to mix the cough syrup with soda and hard candy to experience its effects.
Dex-Tuss can always be abused as it is easy to access, offers a low price and there is a relative acceptance among peers. Like all narcotics, however, it is very addictive and can be lethal.
As codeine is a derivative of morphine, it will produce a similar type of dependency to heroin, although less potent in form. Once an addiction develops, the user will feel a need to take the drug multiple times each day and requiring increased amounts of the drug to experience similar effects, increasing the risk for overdose.
Effects of Dex-Tuss
Dex-Tuss delivers effects that can be felt within forty-five minutes after oral administration and can often last between four to six hours. When taken orally, codeine is absorbed through the gastro-intestinal tract, ensuring there is little lost during the passage through the liver.
Codeine is converted to morphine when it enters the brain. Dex-Tuss is often prescribed for patients who are experiencing a non-productive cough. Some individuals taking the drug may experience dizziness, drowsiness or headache, warmth, redness or tingling under the skin, nausea or vomiting, constipation, or a skin rash or itching.
Withdrawal of Dex-Tuss
Dex-Tuss is a narcotic and it is possible to become psychologically and/or physically dependent on this drug. If an addiction develops, the abrupt cessation can cause the user to enter into a withdrawal that is similar to a heroin withdrawal and symptoms can last for several days with intensity before subsiding.
The withdrawal symptoms associated with Dex-Tuss include but are not limited to:
· Nausea
· Pain
· Anxiety
· Diarrhea
· Insomnia
· Irritability
Treatment of Dex-Tuss Addiction
Extended use of Dex-Tuss can lead to extreme physical pain and psychological distress when discontinuing the use of the drug. The sudden cessation of the drug can especially cause the user intense suffering, requiring that users be treated under the care of a board-certified physician and board-certified addiction psychiatrist.
Entering a quality center for 24/7 comfortable detox treatment will ensure the individual rids their body of the drug completely. This method involves the administration of medications that are specifically designed Dex-Tuss addiction. The medications are used to correct the chemical imbalances in the individual and should be combined with psychological evaluations and other medical care to address cravings for the drug.
